Jockey Club helps set up Chinese Medicine Disease Prevention and Health Management Centre
12/07/2018

Given Hong Kong's ageing population trend and high prevalence of chronic disease, rising future medical costs are becoming a major concern.

To help address this challenge by enhancing precautionary healthcare, the Club’s Charities Trust has granted the School of Chinese Medicine of the Hong Kong Baptist University (HKBU) a donation of some HK$90 million to set up the Jockey Club Chinese Medicine Disease Prevention and Health Management Centre, as well as launch a five-year Jockey Club "Embrace Health" Chinese Medicine Programme.

The initiative, the first of its kind in Hong Kong, will provide quality medical and healthcare services with modern Chinese medicine technology and methods, along with comprehensive public education on practical health management knowledge, all aimed at enhancing the long-term health of the public.

It is well known that prevention is better than cure, and this is also one of the traditional Chinese Medicine (CM) concepts, namely "Zhi Wei Bing". The Club has already established a productive partnership with HKBU for promoting the development of Chinese medicine in Hong Kong. In 1998, it supported the establishment of the Jockey Club School of Chinese Medicine Building at HKBU, Hong Kong's first facility focused on Chinese medicine teaching, research and on-the-job training. The School provides advanced facilities for the study of Chinese medicine, in line with the Government's active promotion of Chinese medicine development.

The newly-launched Jockey Club Chinese Medicine Disease Prevention and Health Management Centre and Jockey Club "Embrace Health" Chinese Medicine Programme are expected to benefit over 400,000 people in the coming five years. This includes 63,000 senior citizens who will receive 50% discount on CM health services, while low-income elderly people including CSSA recipients will be offered the services free.

Located in Prince Edward and occupying a floor area of about 4,000 sq ft, the Jockey Club Chinese Medicine Disease Prevention and Health Management Centre includes facilities such as body constitution and chronic disease treatment rooms, health assessment rooms, a moxibustion room, a dispensary and advanced body diagnostic equipment, and provides the following services:

  • CM Body Constitution Assessment service – Personalised health assessments will be provided with the aid of CM body diagnostic equipment, enabling minor symptoms to be detected and body condition determined.
  • CM Disease Prevention and Health Management service – Based on users' CM Health Assessment results, CM Healthcare Advisors will help formulate personalised and integrated preventive health management plans. Advisors will offer integrated treatments including Chinese herbal medicines, acupuncture, moxibustion, qigong, taichi, food therapy and tea therapy to improve users' health or tackle chronic problems.
  • Cloud Health Management – An "Embrace Health" mobile app initiated by the Centre will allow the general public to record their health information such as exercise data and heart rate, and keep track of their health records on the system in order to achieve their goals of preventing diseases and managing their long-term health. The health information provided on the App can help users acquire Chinese medicine health knowledge and learn more about different types of body constitution. Users can also post questions for the CM Healthcare Advisors to answer. The App (currently available for Android users only) can be downloaded at: https://embracehealth.org.hk/app_download.php.

Under the Jockey Club "Embrace Health" Chinese Medicine Programme, the Centre will create a Chinese medicine health education website, manuals and videos, and organise seminars and workshops for the general public with a view to helping them achieve health management and disease prevention goals by acquiring relevant Chinese medicine knowledge.

In addition, there will be a study of the efficacy of CM in disease prevention, the results of which will be conducive to the development of evidence-based CM.
