Club helps provide a home for new Jockey Club College of Veterinary Medicine and Life Sciences
20/08/2018

In November 2017, the Club’s Charities Trust announced a donation of HK$500 million to City University of Hong Kong (CityU) to establish the Jockey Club One Health Tower. Due to open in 2022, the Tower will house Hong Kong’s first College of Veterinary Medicine and Life Sciences, to be named after the Club.

An official naming ceremony of the Jockey Club College of Veterinary Medicine and Life Sciences was held at CityU on 20 August. The college comprises the Department of Biomedical Sciences and the Department of Infectious Diseases and Public Health.  By combining veterinary medicine and biomedical sciences under the banner of ‘One Health’, it embodies the important insight that the health of human beings is intimately connected with the health of animals and with the environment, in which they co-exist.

The Department of Biomedical Sciences is intended to become a centre for biomedical education and research on cancer, neuroscience and regenerative medicine, while the Department of Infectious Diseases and Public Health will pursue research in areas such as emerging infectious diseases, food safety and aquatic production.

The latter is also overseeing Hong Kong’s first professional veterinary Bachelor’s degree programme. The University Grants Committee (UGC) has recently decided to support the six-year Bachelor of Veterinary Medicine programme as a publicly-funded programme starting from 2019/20.

Together they will turn the Jockey Club One Health Tower into an educational and research base for veterinary medicine and life sciences, and help Hong Kong adopt a more holistic approach to health risk management.
