Strokes kill more than 3,000 people a year in Hong Kong and are not only suffered by the elderly – in recent years, along with other neurological illnesses, they have become more common among younger people. Early and integrated rehabilitation is critical to patients in the first six months of such conditions; otherwise they might suffer from significant permanent physical and functional disabilities.

To help address this concern, The Hong Kong Jockey Club Charities Trust has donated over HK$16.5 million to Princess Margaret Hospital to build an Integrated Neurological Rehabilitation Centre, the first of its kind in Hong Kong.

Occupying 10,000 square-feet on the ground floor of Princess Margaret Hospital in Kwai Chung, The Jockey Club Integrated Neurological Rehabilitation Centre accommodates professionals from various departments: Medical and Geriatric, Neurosurgery, Occupational Therapy and Physiotherapy and Speech Therapy. This enables patients suffering from disorders like strokes, brain injuries or other neurological illnesses to receive one-stop multi-disciplinary rehabilitation services.

Another notable feature of the Centre is its adoption of state-of-the-art rehabilitative equipment that utilises robotic, Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation and virtual reality technology to improve clinical efficacy.
