Homegrown plants: edible and beautiful

In recent years, Hong Kong people have fallen in love with healthy living. Some even try to grow and cook their own fruits, vegetables and herbs at home, since not only can they enjoy food from a trusted source, but the plants also beautify their homes.

In addition to the traditional method of growing plants in soil, now it’s quite popular to grow with hydroponics. The benefits to hydroponics are that it is cleaner than dirt, and there aren’t as many insects. What’s more, you can grow popular produce, such as herbs, lettuce, tomatoes and more. Plus, the water used in hydroponics is recycled, which lessens the need for water and fertilisers.

The equipment needed for hydroponics can be generally separated into two categories: the fish tank style, which is small in size and therefore easy to place and move around, and the bigger pipeline style which allows for growing a greater variety of plants but requires a larger space, such as a rooftop or balcony.

Let’s listen as a Green Volunteer shares some of the tips and benefits of growing plants at home.
