Taspony is for everyone

Winter is a festive season with so many good things to eat and drink; but the drop in temperature also makes us less active and therefore it’s easy to put on weight. In this episode, we’ll introduce you to a brand new indoor sport that’s suitable for all ages. It’s a great way for the whole family to keep comfortably fit, and keep the blood pumping so you stay warmer during cold winter days.

Taspony originated at the YMCA in Japan. In 2009, it was introduced in Hong Kong where it slowly evolved into a new sport. It was first developed for those needing to rehabilitate their limbs; so not only is it very safe, but both the rules and the skills needed to play it are very simple. The ball itself is light and soft, and you don’t need a racket to play – just the front and back of your hands. This makes it perfect for those who are having their first taste of ball sports.

Although the taspony ball is light, it can move and change direction pretty quick, so players need to be on their toes and always thinking about where it could go next. Plus, using both hands to hit the ball while moving in all directions trains both the body and the brain to react quicker, making it especially suited to both children and the elderly.

Let’s have a listen as Miko Wong, the District Assistant of the Chinese YMCA of Hong Kong - Jockey Club "Mapperthon Community Action" Project, explains a bit more about taspony. If you want to know more about the sport, please visit the project’s FB fanpage.
