Spine health can’t be ignored

Heavy school bags, not being active, and spending too much time playing on their mobiles pretty much sums up the life of many Hong Kong kids. This has led to spinal issues in children becoming increasingly more common. Symptoms usually include: headache and dizziness, chest pain, neck pain, poor sleep, inability to concentrate, poor respiratory function, etc.

The chiropractic is responsible for transmitting messages from all parts of the body to the brain and vice versa. Therefore, it plays a very important role. Misalignment of the spine will cause obstruction of these messages, which will affect proper bodily functions and lead to problems with your posture and overall health.

Different stages of spinal problems
  Cause Example
Infancy
  • Congenital abnormality or use of forceps or vacuum when being born
  • Baby favours one side when breastfeeding or doing other actions
  • Wry neck
Childhood
  • Poor posture or an accidental fall when learning to walk
  • Carrying overweight school bags in primary and secondary school
  • Lack of exercise
  • Uneven shoulders and ears, a stiff back, uneven shoulder blades
  • Young children who can’t bend over and touch their toes
  • Girls who grow tall and thin and therefore tend to hunch over
Adulthood
  • On-the-job strain and long-term bending of the neck to look at the computer or other electronics
  • Pain in many parts of the body

It’s not easy for kids to know when they’re having a problem with their posture. When they feel pain, the situation has most likely already become serious. Parents should pay more attention to their children’s posture and any symptoms. Once you discover a problem, you should consult a qualified chiropractor as soon as possible. The chiropractors of the Children Chiropractic Foundation have put together a simple demonstration of how you can visually examine your children. They also share tips for avoiding spinal problems in infancy
