Funded exclusively by The Hong Kong Jockey Club Charities Trust and organised by the Asia Society Hong Kong (ASHK) Center, “Painting Her Way: The Ink Art of Fang Zhaoling” chronicles the artistic career of Dr Fang Zhaoling, one of the 20th century’s most outstanding Chinese female artists. The exhibition includes ink paintings and calligraphy artworks that display a combination of Chinese and Western art education and practice in a style that is all her own. The artistic achievements of Dr. Fang Zhaoling also reveal the contributions of modern women to Chinese social culture. The exhibition is free of charge – mark the date!
Dr Fang Zhaoling played an important role in the 20th century Chinese art scene. Having studied painting with leading Chinese artists Qian Songyan, Zhao Shaoang and Zhang Daqian, and coupled with the contrasting influence of a Western-style education, Dr Fang used modern elements in her artwork that were unique and outstanding.
This is the first solo exhibition since Dr Fang’s passing in 2006, and features a selection of over 60 ink paintings, calligraphy artworks and seals to help enrich the public’s understanding of modern Chinese art. Some of the works are on display for the first time, and come from the Fang Zhaoling Foundation, Hong Kong Museum of Art, University Museum and Gallery of The University of Hong Kong, and the University of Oregon collections.
Running alongside the exhibition is The Jockey Club Art Education and Female Empowerment Series, which includes free public lectures, dialogue sessions, art workshops, movie screenings and more. These will give participants the chance to understand more about Dr Fang’s artistic journey and the stories behind other female role models and their role in historic events.
