Organised by HULU Culture and sponsored by The Hong Kong Jockey Club Charities Trust, the Hong Kong Jockey Club Heritage x Arts x Design (H.A.D.) Walk Project continues its tradition of amalgamating creative ideas and community elements as it articulates a thoughtful and artistic temporary exhibition. This year’s theme is “Village for Life”, and on display are 14 shipping containers that carry artefacts and narratives in community culture scavenged from Yuen Long and Tuen Mun. Combing through plots and settlements, unearthing village anecdotes and customs that were all but forgotten, the exhibition endeavours to integrate historical culture, art and design in guided tours and workshops. You’re invited to experience this very unique cultural experience. Mark the date!
The seventh Hong Kong Jockey Club Heritage x Arts x Design (H.A.D.) Walk Project under the theme “Village for Life” will focus on the unique cultural stories of Yuen Long and Tuen Mun. Both customs and the environment are ever-sustaining and intertwined; they complement each other so that precious and worthy customs may be preserved for posterity. The exhibition will showcase the shared vision of an idyllic rural environment and the pursuit of a sustainable lifestyle.
Yuen Long and Tuen Mun cover vast expanses in the northwestern New Territories. In olden days, these two districts were fishing villages where major clans had their settlements. For centuries, this land nurtured an abundance of colourful native cultures and preserved a host of festivities, customs and rites—a true indigenous treasure trove. The exhibition will showcase village home life, including the creative village lighting design and the surrounding large-scale installation of art. It also features an area where you can see a conceptual model of a traditional private school and experience life as a student in the olden days.
In addition to an art exhibition area formed by shipping containers outside the Yuen Long Theatre, another unique feature is the second exhibition venue at Tuen Mun’s Yau Kung School and the Tang Ancestral Hall which are over 100 years old. The former private tutorage was declared a monument in 2007.
Since 2010, The Hong Kong Jockey Club Charities Trust has supported the H.A.D. Walk Project. Through the lens of history and culture, young people are encouraged to explore their communities, recreating traditional customs, and converging in creativity. In this way, cultural conservation messages and positive energy can be share with all. Over the past few years, the programme has introduced the public to Sha Tin, Sai Kung, Central & Western District, Sham Shui Po, Kwai Tsing and Tsuen Wan, Tai Po and Fanling. From a perspective of cultural and creative understanding, we can come to know the unique characteristics of old areas, and then pass the message of cultural preservation on to future generations, while injecting positive energy into the community.
Culture and arts enthusiasts are welcome to join their families and friends at the “Village For Life” traditional arts and culture exhibition!
