Jockey Club Yan Hong Building strengthens care for frail and visually-impaired elderly
20/01/2017

Vision  and other physical deterioration are part of the ageing process. With Hong Kong facing a rapidly aging population, the number of frail elderly people suffering blindness or low vision has also increased significantly, creating a growing demand for residential services that can cater for their special needs.

The Club places great importance on meeting the needs of Hong Kong’s  disadvantaged, with the aim of raising their living standard and promoting equal opportunities for all. With this in mind, the Club’s Charities Trust has made total donations of HK$200 million to the Hong Kong Society for the Blind between 2009 and 2014 to redevelop their Yuen Long Home, one of the first establishments to address the needs of the city’s aged blind when built in 1971.

Reopened on 9 December 2016, the seven-storey facility is now renamed the Hong Kong Society for the Blind Jockey Club Yan Hong Building and adopts the theme of a rainbow, with the seven colours representing vitality, positivity, hope, happiness, health, capability and harmony. The building’s capacity has doubled from 80 places to 160. Forty of the new places have been allocated to supported residential services for people with multiple handicaps, including visual impairment, who need residential care and either day activities or rehabilitation support.

The comprehensive facilities of the Jockey Club Yan Hong Building include an anti-wandering system and a computerised medication system, aimed at providing a comfortable, barrier-free and ‘smart home’ environment to its users. A general eye and low vision centre on the ground floor provides high-quality services to the general public.

The Trust’s funding also covered an upgrading of the Hong Kong Society for the Blind’s Jockey Club Tuen Mun Home, which has helped it accommodate and provide continued quality care for those affected by reconstruction of the Yuen Long building. The total number of residential beds at the Tuen Mun Home has increased from 240 to 320.
