Junior Sports Reporters enjoy their first taste of live commentating
04/05/2017

The second stage of the Hong Kong Jockey Club Junior Sports Reporter Programme has gotten underway, and not only have the students been busy conducting group interviews at the Hong Kong Games, but they’ve also been taking part in another big event – live webcasts!

This live event took place over the Easter holidays during the Club’s annual flagship community event, the three-day “Riding High Together Festival” at Sha Tin Racecourse and Penfold Park. Soccer pitches were created on the Concourse level of the racecourse for the annual HKJC Soccer 4 tournament, and it was there that the junior reporters geared up to experience being commentators for the first time. Mentoring the students at the invitation of the Club were radio host and director Marco Hung and professional football commentator Ken Chung. Programme alumni also joined in to help guide the students in doing live interviews and behind-the-scenes work. Everyone had a job to do to make sure that the first live webcast done by this year’s junior reporters went smoothly. Around 4,000 people watched the action, which was more than tuned in last year. Judging from that, the event was a record-breaking success!

Students who participated in the live webcast not only learned a lot from the two mentors, but they also were given the chance to work things out on their own. Junior Reporter Joyce Cheng said: “I get nervous a lot, so this was a great chance for me to work on overcoming this weakness.” Programme Leader Li Tak Nang was impressed by the students: “Compared to past years, the students this year were more mature, calm and overall the whole programme was more professional.”

In addition to the commentators, another 10 junior reporters attended the festival to conduct written interviews and news reports with “sports” and “family” at the heart of their stories. Some of the students were tasked with interviewing Manchester United legend Peter Schmeichel; and in addition to asking him about football, they also invited him to share his feelings of being a father.
