Jockey Club-supported glass recycling project moves into exciting new era
24/01/2019

Since 2010, the Club’s Charities Trust has made donations totalling almost HK$20 million by phases to implement the Hong Chi Jockey Club Glass Bottle Recycling Project in collaboration with the Hong Chi Association. The project is aimed at promoting environment-friendly messages and at the same time creating vocational opportunities for people with intellectual disabilities.

With the Club’s three-phase initiative now successfully concluded, the Government's Environmental Protection Department will take the project forward and extend it to all 18 districts of Hong Kong.

Under the Hong Chi Jockey Club Glass Bottle Recycling Project, collection points have been set up in residential estates, shopping malls and hospitals around the city, extending from 14 points at the very beginning to a total of 430 points over the nine years, an expansion that demonstrates the steadily increasing demand in the community. Some 6,000 tonnes of glass bottles have been collected and recycled into eco-bricks - enough to pave 636 standard basketball courts!

Apart from promoting environment-friendly messages, the project has provided approximately 450 training and vocational opportunities for trainees of Hong Chi Association, who have gone on to serve as Clean Recycling Ambassadors, giving other organisations hands-on experience of glass waste separation. Meanwhile 629 outreach workshops have helped the public learn more about glass ‘upcycling’ and green lifestyles.

Just as importantly, the project has helped give the public a better understanding of the capabilities of trainees with intellectual disabilities, thus promoting social inclusion.
