Jockey Club supports preventive multi-cancer screening for citizens
03/11/2020

The CUHK Jockey Club Multi-Cancer Prevention Programme recently announced the interim results of its five-year programme which employs a one stop approach to screen for multiple cancers. Out of the first 3,500 people who have so far participated in free screening of colorectal, prostate or breast cancer, 61 have been diagnosed with cancer.

Funded by The Hong Kong Jockey Club Charities Trust with a donation of over HK$35 million in 2018 and run by the Faculty of Medicine of The Chinese University of Hong Kong, the programme examines the relationship between cancer and obesity, and provides free cancer screening, medical follow-up or referral to eligible individuals. It targets to benefit 10,000 citizens aged between 40 and 75 who are asymptomatic. The data collected will help formulate the long-term policies in cancer prevention.

Moreover, the community education campaign under the programme aims to raise public awareness on healthy lifestyle and weight management which will help reduce the risk of cancer.

Speaking at the press conference where the results were announced, the Club's Executive Director, Charities and Community, Leong Cheung said: "Cancer screening is an effective way of cancer prevention as it allows early detection such that patients can receive treatment as soon as possible. The Club is a strong supporter of cancer prevention, treatment and support services. We are also working with different institutions and universities to strengthen Hong Kong's cancer research and treatment standards by providing diversified services as well as timely and appropriate assistance to patients and their carers".
