Jockey Club continues its five-decade support for the Hong Kong Arts Festival Bringing hope and positive energy to the community during the pandemic
25/02/2022

The 50th Hong Kong Arts Festival opened on 25 February. The Club has been supporting the Festival for five decades and is delighted to once more contribute to its success. At this difficult time for the community, the Festival’s online performances will bring much-needed entertainment and positive energy to Hong Kong.

In his welcoming speech, delivered online, Club Chairman Philip Chen said the Club had been pleased to support the Hong Kong Arts Festival since its launch. The Club hopes the Festival will inspire and lift our community spirit, helping people face the pandemic as well as future challenges with a positive attitude.

The Club’s purpose is to act continuously for the betterment of our society. As with all its donations, the Club’s support for the Hong Kong Arts Festival is made possible by its unique integrated business model through which racing and wagering generate tax and charity support for the community.

As a long-term partner of the Hong Kong Arts Festival, the Club is once again supporting the Festival’s opening performance, Romeo and Juliet performed by the Paris Opera Ballet. This Asian video premiere, part of The Hong Kong Jockey Club Series.

Since 2008, the Club has supported three main pillar programmes under The Hong Kong Jockey Club Series, which brings some of the world’s leading performances to Hong Kong. In addition to the opening performance, this year’s series includes two operas by Bayerische Staatsoper: Korngold's Die tote Stadt (The Dead City) and Shostakovich's The Nose; a concert presented by Bamberg Symphony Orchestra; and two more signature productions from the Paris Opera Ballet: Body and Soul and Giselle.

Meanwhile, The Hong Kong Jockey Club Student Matinee Programme enabled students to enjoy a free online concert by the Bamberg Symphony Orchestra, featuring Saint-Saëns’ The Carnival of the Animals and Haas‘ Little I-am-me. The Club is also supporting free online educational activities to encourage students to learn more about music.

The Club is also pleased to support a variety of other arts programmes, in particular to support the best of Hong Kong’s rising talent. In line with government health measures in response to the pandemic, these in-venue events will be postponed or changed to online viewing. For details, please see the Festival website. They include:

The Jockey Club Local Creative Talents Series. An original Cantonese-language musical Yat-sen, which brings together some of the most illustrious names in Hong Kong film and theatre, and Love Streams, the first dance-opera produced on the Series platform.

The Jockey Club InnoArts Series. A brand new series under the Festival featuring two special performances: SHHVirtual Reality, combining virtual reality and live theatre experience, and Shuffle DimensionsA Performative Installation Concert, in which contemporary music, installation and digital arts intertwine and interact, revealing the invisible landscape of music.

HKartsFestival@TaiKwun. A series of art performances in various disciplines will be available online in April.

Laila. A special online feature will provide a behind-the-scenes insight into the making of this spectacular immersive opera experience. Laila is supported by the Club in celebration of the Festival’s 50th anniversary.
