The International Social Service Hong Kong Branch (ISSHK) Hope Centre organised the “Beyond Race” event on 3 December 2023, with the aim of promoting racial harmony, equality, integration, acceptance, and respect for diverse cultures and communities. This event brought together the ethnic minority community and local people in Hong Kong, fostering cultural exchange and understanding.
The event commenced at Charter Garden in Central, where participants gathered to embark on a race that took them to different cultural landmarks across Hong Kong Island. Teams competed to complete culture-themed tasks at each pit stop and made their way back to the finish line as quickly as possible.
The pit stops along the race route were curated to provide participants with diverse cultural experiences. To ensure the smooth execution of the event, the CARE@hkjc Volunteer Team provided crowd control and on-site logistical assistance for the pit stops. Twelve CARE volunteers supported the operation of the pit stops, overseeing the completion of various games. At Pit Stop A in Kennedy Town, participants immersed themselves in Indonesian culture and learnt to play the angklung, a traditional Indonesian musical instrument made of bamboo tubes. Pit Stop B in Sai Ying Pun introduced participants to Thai culture through a Thai Boxing Execution activity, where they learnt basic Thai Boxing techniques. Pit Stop D in Admiralty challenged participants' knowledge of Chinese history with a Historical Quiz Game. Pit Stop G in North Point showcased Pakistani Culture through a Cricket Game, a popular sport in Pakistan.
Additionally, two CARE volunteers managed the Chinese Culture Booth, engaging participants in an activity that involved picking red dates and beans using chopsticks. Meanwhile, six CARE painters offered face painting services, adding colour and vibrancy to the event.
