Completion of Kam Tin Mural under “Mural Painting In Rural Villages” Programme
20/06/2022

A number of villages in the New Territories with long histories not only have buildings with conservation values, but also have been preserving a lot of traditional customs. Partnering with the Heung Yee Kuk New Territories (HYK) and its 27 Rural Committees, CARE Team has launched a community arts programme called “Mural Painting in Rural Villages”. The programme aims at promoting traditional cultural heritages of rural communities as well as incorporating an artistic touch to the rural landscape in Hong Kong.  In June 2022, CARE volunteers joined hands with Kam Tin villagers and completed the seventh painting of the programme in collaboration with Kam Tin Rural Committee (KTRC).

Located next to the declared monument Kat Hing Wai Walled Village, the mural showcases the historic moment of villagers welcoming the return of the iron gates in 1925, which allows the public to gain insight into an important incident happened in Kam Tin around a hundred years ago. Furthermore, the mural displays Kam Tin’s three famous tourist spots – Kat Hing Wai, the Kam Tin Tree House and Kam Tin’s very own Mirror of the Sky.

The mural completion ceremony was held on 20 June 2022. The officiating guests including the Club’s Head of External Affairs Eddie Poon and Executive Manager of Community Relations Freely Cheng joined the Deputy Director-General of the New Territories Office of the Liaison Office of the Central People's Government in the HKSAR Li Gong-xun, the Chairman of KTRC Tang Ho-nin and the Chairwoman of HYK the New Territories Traditional Cultural Committee Chan Ka-mun to put a final touch to the Kam Tin mural at the ceremony.

After the ceremony, the officiating guests and CARE volunteers took this opportunity to visit Kat Hing Wai Walled Village and its shrine, where the guests and CARE members learned more about the unique architectural and historical background of Kat Hing Wai from the village head. They also had the chance to visit the youth centre adjacent to the KTRC office, where they enjoyed delicious traditional tea cakes specially prepared by the KTRC.
