CARE Volunteers Extend their Love to SPCA Homing Animals
20/06/2022

Who would’ve thought that a few old T-shirts and cardboard boxes could bring so much joy to cats and dogs? CARE@hkjc Volunteer Team has continuously supported various animal rights advocates. In collaboration with the Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Hong Kong (SPCA), 60 CARE volunteers participated in three workshops making pet toys for the homing animals to further the cause of enhancing animal welfare.

SPCA saves hundreds of animals every year. Those suitable for rehoming will be taken to SPCA’s Adoption Centres, yet it usually takes quite a while before these poor animals get a forever home. During this period, toys are crucial for helping the homing animals to stay mentally stable.

The first pet toys DIY workshop was held back in December 2021.  However, it had to come to a halt due to the fifth wave of the pandemic. Luckily with the pandemic situation stabilising in May 2022, our volunteers were able to attend the other two workshops at SPCA Headquarters on 30 May and 20 June, and spent delightful and meaningful afternoons making pet toys such as cardboard cat scratchers and tug toys for dogs using recycled materials. In addition, volunteers were glad to have the opportunity to visit the SPCA Wan Chai Adoption Centre and made friendly acquaintances with some furry friends with the aim of rebuilding trust of the animals towards human beings, hence enhancing their chances of being adopted.
