Jaqueline Leung is the Assistant Coach at The Jockey Club Kau Sai Chau Public Golf Course (KSC), the only golf course in Hong Kong open for public enjoyment. While today Jacqueline finds joy in coaching and leading Hong Kong’s team of disabled golfers to world championships, golf wasn’t her first love. “When I was little, I wanted to be a jockey,” she revealed, “however, my dream was thwarted by visual disability and injury.” A chance recommendation from her doctor led her to develop a second passion for golf.

A training ground for all

Jacqueline was determined to turn her passion for the sport into a career, and KSC was her training ground. “Without KSC, I would not have been able to play and train to be a coach,” she said. Built in the 1990s with a donation of HK$700 million from the Club, KSC has enabled the elite sport of golf available and affordable to the wider community, including disabled players and the Club-sponsored Special Olympics team. “I think playing golf helps them a lot,” Jacqueline explained. “The establishment of KSC has given more people the opportunity to achieve their dreams.”

A friend to the environment

Situated along the rugged coastline of Kai Sai Chau just off the Sai Kung peninsula, KSC was designed and is operated with a strong commitment to environmental protection. In 2005, it became only the fifth course in Asia and the first anywhere in China to be classified as a Certified Audubon Cooperative Sanctuary for Wildlife, an award that recognises KSC’s high standards of environmental management. In 2010, solar-hybrid powered boats were introduced on the ferry service between KSC and Sai Kung, and golf carts at KSC were equipped with purpose-designed solar-power canopies. These two green initiatives have helped KSC reduce its energy consumption, decrease carbon footprint, and reduce marine pollution.
