Overview

The Hong Kong Jockey Club and Tai Kwun invite you to step into a magical Christmas tale. This annual tradition brings to life three core accents of the season: joy, giving, and togetherness, promising an unforgettable festive experience for all. As this year marks the 140th anniversary of the Club, the event also celebrates the city’s community, the people of Hong Kong who truly make good possible throughout the 140-year journey with the Club.

Vibrant Festive Activities​

A special opening concert The Gift of Music, marks the festivities, set to bring a joyful spirit to every corner of the site. As the sun sets, the Hong Kong Children’s Choir, Hong Kong’s most established and long-standing children’s choir takes to the stage, filling the crisp evening air with melodies that evoke wonder and generosity.​

Tai Kwun Circus Plays

Established in 2018 as one of the first contemporary circus festivals in Hong Kong, this exciting annual programme brings the magic of contemporary circus arts to life with 12 captivating programmes. Featuring a diverse line-up of international, Asian and local artists, the festival showcases from jaw-dropping acrobatics to heartwarming clown acts; each show is designed to combine artistic components and add theatrical dramaturgy, which delight visitors of all ages.

Mellow Yellow

Named one of “Twelve Artists to Watch” by Le Monde, Ricardo S. Mendes, with two like-minded friends, creates a shared universe with their work Mellow Yellow. They meet Hong Kong audience with a gentle and carefully crafted shade of yellow, warming the hearts of the audiences.

New Boom in Circus

Two performances: Jason Lee, a Hong Kong circus artist, and Tito Hung, a Taiwanese juggler and dancer, share the beauty of collaboration through juggling; theatre actress Ko Ki Yan takes the audience on a theatrical journey, exploring the relationship between self and body through puppetry.

Asian Circus Focus

Connecting with the world and enhancing exchange among circus artists is a longstanding aim of Tai Kwun Circus Plays. Asian Circus Focus is a new platform to showcase some of the best circus artists in Asia. The first edition features Landscape Juggling by Yuri Yamamura from Japan, The Happening Show – My Dream & Circus Games by South Korea’s Circus D. Lam, and a new work bringing together Nan-yin and Cry wheel by Hong Kong artists Lai Yee and Jason Kong.

One door, one exit, four people bringing their acclaimed physical circus and dance performance from Europe to Tai Kwun.

The four performers are experts in in bascule, belts, trapeze and acro-dance. They move in and through the door, climb and collide. They propel and balance each other, flirting with risk.

Playbook

Renowned in Australia and Europe, the, contemporary circus company Gravity & Others Myths brings their acclaimed performance to Tai Kwun. Exploring gravity and balancing through bodies, performers’ movements are flexible, dynamic, even unpredictable. The public are immersed in their journey and become part of the performance.

Pappagalli

The colourful giant puppet parrots from the Netherlands’ Teatro Pavana have flied to Tai Kwun meeting friends and families this Christmas. These giant parrots dance and play at the Parade Ground. Their beautiful feathers capture every person’s heart.

Ting Koo-ki Mad Skills Battle

Each December in Tai Kwun, “Ting-koo-ki” from Taiwan resonates loudly. Juggling experts from various places eagerly anticipate this thrilling battle. This year, circus masters from all over the world are preparing intensively for this exciting competition.

A person and their shadow at an ordinary crossing, contemporary circus company Colletif du Plateau shows that crossing the road can be extraordinary. The allure of juggling breaks the norms and the performer’s movements defy the rules, creating a visual and auditory experience that challenges perceptions of limits.

Circus Bootcamp 2.0

Circus Bootcamp has always been a breeding ground of new generations of circus artists. This year, five young individuals with diverse skills in acrobatics, magic, hip-hop dance and contemporary dance are invited to join six months of professional training.

The Hong Kong Jockey Club Series: The Art Plaza Project at the Hong Kong Palace Museum

Under the theme of traditional Chinese garden aesthetics, this Hong Kong Palace Museum’s first outdoor public art exhibition features six sculptures and multi-media installations created by six cross-disciplinary Hong Kong artists and architect, presenting poetic and zen-style landscapes through a contemporary lens.
