The Wenchuan Earthquake in 2008 killed 69,227 and left more than 370,000 injured. People from all over the world took part in the rescue efforts and post-earthquake reconstruction. The Club offered an emergency relief donation immediately after the earthquake, later approving a HK$1 billion donation to support a series of reconstruction projects. This included the Mianyang 3rd City Hospital HKJC Medical Complex, Mianyang Youxian Zhongxing HKJC Junior Middle School, Deyang HKJC No.5 Middle School, Ya’an HKJC Vocational College, Sichuan HKJC Olympic School, Sichuan Provincial 8-1 Rehabilitation Centre, and the Sichuan University – Hong Kong Polytechnic University Institute for Disaster Management and Reconstruction HKJC Building and HKJC Research Centre on Disaster Management.
The Institute for Disaster Management and Reconstruction is the first of its kind in China, specialising in disaster preparedness, disaster risk reduction and disaster reconstruction. In addition to sponsoring the construction of its campus, laboratories and facilities, the Club provided financial support for the first phase of training courses. Covering an area of more than 200,000 square feet, the Institute is located at Sichuan University in Chengdu’s Jiang’an District. It was completed in 2013.
