Every child has the right to discover and nurture their passions in arts and sports, unhindered by their family’s circumstances or means.
Tam Wing Him, a Primary Three student at SKH Kei Oi Primary School in Sham Shui Po, was born with a hearing impairment and relies on hearing aids in his daily life. Through JC Project MuSE, he was introduced to the clarinet for the first time, and quickly discovered a deep passion for the instrument.
“I love playing the clarinet. I even performed for my parents at our school’s Christmas party,” said Wing Him, beaming with delight. “The first time I heard him play a whole song,” his mother recalled, “tears welled up in my eyes. I was deeply moved.”
Wing Him, an introvert by nature, gradually opened up through playing the clarinet—his very first musical instrument—and found his voice. “Since joining the project, Wing Him has developed a stronger sense of responsibility and has devoted himself to learning the clarinet,” his mother continued, “He has become more open about his everyday school life and has formed new friendships. He is now able to articulate his thoughts clearly and shows greater attentiveness in class.”

In addition to his weekly group clarinet and ensemble training, Wing Him also takes part in basketball coaching led by former members of Hong Kong’s basketball team through the project. Inherently quiet and reserved, he admitted his love for the sport, describing it as “healthy and exciting”.
His mother has seen how the music and sports trainings of the project has benefited her son – helping him improve his physical coordination, become more emotionally open, and strengthen his social skills and sense of teamwork.
JC Project MuSE is a school-based programme, providing free and high-quality music and sports training for underprivileged children. The project’s three-tier approach offers entry-level taster programmes, continuous training in both music and sports, and advanced training for exceptional talent, aiming to cultivate an interest in arts and sports among primary school students in Hong Kong’s most disadvantaged areas. We hope that every child, regardless of background, has equal access to opportunities for growth and learning. The project seeks to provide underprivileged children with opportunities to experience and participate in music and sports, nurture their interests, spark creativity and build confidence.
Through a variety of activities such as musical performances, community showcases and sports competitions, the project enriches students’ experiences and widens their exposure, and seeks to cultivate greater support for and participation in music and sports among teaching staff, parents, and the community. It does not only transform individual lives, but also seeks to contribute to building a healthier, more vibrant community.
