The problems facing the underprivileged are often known by the rest of society in abstract terms only. To change their lives for the better, cross-sectoral support is needed to create opportunities for them to unleash their potential and integrate in the society.
Give strength to the underprivileged
Hong Kong has achieved immense economic progress over the past several decades, but some individuals and groups remain underprivileged. Because of their low socio-economic status, their voices often go unheard and their plight is not properly understood, leaving them under-represented in different aspects of public life.
These underprivileged citizens include children from poor households, families living in transitional housing or sub-divided flats, chronically homeless people, and newly-arrived women with limited knowledge of community resources.
Though practically voiceless, the underprivileged are not in small numbers. For example, there are more than 220,000 people living in partitioned flats in Hong Kong. In addition, the number of homeless people in Hong Kong has more than doubled over the past decade, rising from 595 in 2013 to 1,564 in end 2022.
Statistics showed that the overall poverty rate reached 20 per cent in the first quarter of 2023, with over 1.36 million people living in poverty.
The Hong Kong Jockey Club empowers and strengthens the underprivileged through an assortment of community projects. From poverty alleviation drive to family activities to school-based programmes, these campaigns help break down the barriers to social integration and foster a sense of belonging. Over time, participants will have greater confidence in engaging in social and economic life and may achieve higher social mobility. As we have more projects in the pipeline, the number of beneficiaries will keep growing.
