Arts and culture not only illuminate a person’s inner life and enrich one’s emotional world, but they also support the community’s social wellbeing and cohesion. Yet more can be done to nurture public interest in arts and enhance cultural literacy.
The art way of life
Arts and culture have a profound impact on the development of society and the individuals within it. At the community level, they help embrace diversity and facilitate communication among people from different backgrounds. At the individual level, research has evidenced that a higher frequency of engagement with arts and culture is generally associated with a higher level of wellbeing, and improves the cognitive abilities of children and young people. Another study also identified a major role for arts in the prevention of ill health, and management and treatment of illness.
However, opportunities to engage in arts and culture are not always easily available to everyone.
The Hong Kong Jockey Club strives to nurture a culturally vibrant, creative and inclusive Hong Kong by encouraging public participation in the arts. We provide much-needed backing to a diversity of projects, such as the annual Hong Kong Arts Festival and French May Arts Festival, and venues including Tai Kwun as well as the Hong Kong Palace Museum. By bringing new opportunities for the general public to enjoy local and world-class events and performances, we hope to enrich the lives of Hong Kong people, enhance cultural literacy and foster an appreciation for diversity.
In the years to come, we will continue to support arts development and heritage conservation, and promote Chinese and local Hong Kong culture, so that arts and culture will be accessible to all.
