An ageing population has been one of the biggest challenges facing Hong Kong, and the trend is expected to become more prominent in the years to come. It is crucial to address the diverse needs of the elderly to enhance their well-being, so they can enjoy a more fulfilling life.
Make elderly’s needs count
Hong Kong boasts one of the longest life expectancies in the world, consistently ranking among the top three. But this is a double-edged sword. Together with a declining fertility rate, the Hong Kong population’s long lives are posing a significant challenge to the city: a rapidly ageing population.
The government estimated that by 2046, more than one in three Hong Kong residents will be aged 65 or above, totalling an estimated 2.7 million. The median age of the city’s population is also on the rise, from 47.3 years in 2021 to an estimated 55.5 by 2046.
The unprecedented demographic shift leads to multiple pressing issues, such as surging demand for healthcare, age-friendly facilities, end-of-life care services, longer wait for hospital beds, and ageing carers relying on more support in order to be able to care for others and themselves. The city has reached a tipping point for launching measures to meet the physical, social and psychological needs of elderly people to achieve healthy ageing.
The Hong Kong Jockey Club has launched numerous projects to help senior citizens in different physical and living conditions extend their healthy, active years of life and improve their post-retirement quality of life. There are also initiatives to support the well-being of carers, as they play an important role in helping the elderly who are ageing in place.
