Hong Kong has made major strides in its sports development, with rising public participation in physical activity and more elite athletes bagging medals in international games. But sports for all remains a distant goal, and more needs to be done to build a healthier, more inclusive community.
Elevate the game
Sport can bring positive changes in many ways. It encourages holistic personal development, breaks down barriers, promotes a sense of shared responsibility and fosters unity. As a wider cross-section of society engages in physical exercise, the overall health of the population will improve and the local economy may also see benefits.
Recently, there has been an uptick in sports and fitness awareness in Hong Kong. In 2023, 13 major sports events supported by the government’s “M” Mark system were held in Hong Kong with over 410,000 attendance.
A government survey indicates that the physical fitness performance among Hong Kong adults, such as cardiovascular endurance and muscular strength, have shown improvement compared to a decade ago. Still, there is room for further development as more than 50% of the population fails to meet the level of physical activity recommended by the World Health Organization (WHO). Another research shows that more than 7% Hong Kong population live with disabilities or special needs, and the number is increasing. Many of them are not sufficiently supported to engage in sports activities.
As an institution closely linked with sport, The Hong Kong Jockey Club plays an important role in promoting sport for all and providing backing to citywide events. We support an extensive range of community initiatives, offering more opportunities for a broad spectrum of citizens to thrive through sport.
