Nurturing talent is essential for Hong Kong to stay the course of prosperity and progress. The city must enrich its talent pool by empowering professionals and level up opportunities for people with different capabilities to flourish.
Nurture a city of talent
We are living in an era of change, where technological advancements are leading to a shift in demand for human capital in a volatile environment still recovering from the COVID-19 pandemic. Future work patterns and the accompanying opportunities and challenges facing the young generation will be radically different from those today. To ensure its long-term growth and competitiveness, there is a critical need for Hong Kong to expand its talent pool.
In the last few years, the COVID-19 pandemic and socio-economic changes have seen Hong Kong lose skilled people in a number of sectors. According to government statistics, more than 1,200 full-time doctors have left their positions at public hospitals since 2020. In 2022/23, the attrition rate for full-time nurses rose from 6.3% to 10.9% compared to the previous five years. Meanwhile, in a 2023 global study, Hong Kong dropped from 13th to 15th in 2022, out of 64 economies in terms of investment in and development of talent. The city will need to sharpen its ability to foster and retain talent.
While Hong Kong is lagging behind to nurture local talent, there are still challenges where not everybody in society has the chance to bring their talent into play. Poverty, disabilities and other underprivileged backgrounds can hinder people from fulfilling their potential. Existing professionals in certain sectors also struggle to re-skill themselves amid the changing landscape of technology, or face the difficult task of adapting to changes brought by brain drain.
The Hong Kong Jockey Club strives to cultivate a diverse, skilled and adaptable talent pool for Hong Kong. To this end, we focus on helping people from underprivileged backgrounds to realise their full potential, and supporting aspiring and existing professionals in different fields to enhance their skill sets and capabilities in innovation and leadership. We are behind a wide variety of talent development initiatives that empower individuals and communities. They include youth and career development programmes, vocational training, scholarship and financial aid, all of which help maximise the participants’ impact in the community.
