Diversity & inclusion

Promoting diversity and inclusion is all-important to Hong Kong as an international city. It is about building an environment of acceptance and respect, so that all citizens, including the underprivileged, have the opportunity to advance.

Leave no one behind

In recent years, there has been growing awareness worldwide of the importance of diversity and inclusion. These are values essential for nurturing a healthy and prosperous society, where people from diverse backgrounds are valued and respected, and to make contributions to their communities.

One in two respondents to a local poll conducted in 2023 said it was important that they worked for a company supporting equity, diversity and inclusion. In another survey conducted in 2023, it was found that around 80% of organisations in Hong Kong had given greater importance to the three mentioned values.

Nevertheless, some groups in society remain left behind in different contexts. These include students with special educational needs (SEN), underprivileged, people in custody and more than 600,000 ethnic minorities, who constitute 8.4% of Hong Kong’s population. Meanwhile, the unemployment rate for people with disabilities in Hong Kong has nearly doubled over the past decade.

The Hong Kong Jockey Club aspires to promote social and economic inclusion of all individuals in society. To this end, we team up with partners from different sectors to deliver a wide range of initiatives targeting marginalised individuals and groups. Innovative approaches are adopted for these programmes. Whether it is about promoting neurodiversity*, providing social rehabilitation services, or integrating underprivileged young children in a stimulating and educational environment, our ultimate objective is invariably to give participants more opportunities to thrive.

*Neurodiversity describes the differences in the way people experience and interact with the world around them. This can include autism spectrum disorder or learning disabilities, however these differences should not be viewed as deficits.
