Volunteer

Promoting social good requires efforts from not only the government and big corporations, but also individuals. To harness the power of volunteerism to address social needs, we hope to further unlock the potential of volunteers and build strong social capital to drive positive changes.

Fostering volunteerism

Volunteering has become an ever-growing sector in Hong Kong. Today, more and more people are keen to dedicate their free time to giving back to society and making a positive impact in their community. Government campaigns, NGO initiatives and the rise of the corporate social responsibility have also mobilised a broader base of volunteers including first-timers and helped fuel a culture of volunteerism.

According to a research report, the number of registered volunteers in Hong Kong has expanded more than six-fold since the 1990s. A survey published in 2023 found that 76% of respondents has volunteered in the past year, and the percentage increased to 91% in the last five years. On average, people devote nearly thirteen hours per month, or three hours per week to unpaid work for the community.

It is estimated that the economic value of volunteerism in Hong Kong amounts to more than HK$200 billion. Still, the city's volunteering participation rate is lower than the global average, especially when compared with other industrialised societies. A lack of time and required skills for doing voluntary work are among the major obstacles, especially for people aged below 30. As the city is facing challenges such as an ageing population, boosting the volunteering participation rate is now all the more necessary.

Caring for the community is at the core of The Hong Kong Jockey Club’s mission. As an enabler, we use innovative technology to connect volunteers with the community via a diversity of volunteering opportunities. Through such initiatives as retired senior volunteer programmes and youth volunteer opportunities, we leverage the strengths and knowledge of specific groups of citizens to promote a culture of giving back. We also support different organisations to recruit and train volunteers. Our efforts have benefited over 4.5 million people over the years.
