From moments to momentum: Turning convenings into action

When you attend a convening, the energy in the room can be incredible—meeting peers, exchanging ideas, and feeling part of something bigger. But the real value comes when those conversations turn into ongoing collaboration and action.

Recent months have seen a concentration of global and regional convenings across climate, health, and philanthropy—each bringing together leaders to exchange ideas and build momentum. These gatherings can be energising, but they also raise a more important question: how does that energy translate into sustained action beyond the room?

In practice, the convenings that create the most value are those designed as part of an ongoing journey rather than one-off moments. Relationships and ideas are not built in a single interaction—they are deepened through repeated engagement over time. IoP’s Foundations Circle, taking place on 9 September directly following the landmark PBC Forum 2026, reflects this approach—bringing philanthropic leaders together in a highly curated setting to build trust, exchange perspectives, and continue conversations that extend well beyond the event itself.

_VIN9509-opq3008668672Yet as many of us know, that continuity beyond the initial convening is more aspirational than realised—competing priorities and limited follow-through often mean conversations lose momentum. Where it does happen, it is usually because there we have put our own deliberate structures in place: attending curated group discussions, instigating follow-on exchanges, and targeting collaborations that help us revisit and build on earlier dialogues. This continuity is what ultimately turns participation into progress, ensuring that each engagement builds on the last rather than starting anew.

Therefore, the real value of convenings lies in what happens after they end, and the leaders and organisations that benefit most are deliberate about how they follow through. It is common for our colleagues to create:

  • Structured post-convening synthesis: Distilling 3–5 actionable insights and assigning internal ownership for follow-up within days and weeks, not months.
  • Targeted bilateral follow-ups: Converting initial conversations into smaller, outcome-focused discussions with specific partners.
  • Re-engagement across convenings: Using subsequent forums to revisit themes with peers and potential partners to build continuity.
  • Internal integration: Embedding insights into strategy reviews, programme design, or partnership approaches, rather than treating them as standalone reflections.

These mechanisms help ensure that convenings contribute directly to decision-making, partnerships, and longer-term initiatives rather than remaining as isolated exchanges.

What differentiates high-value convenings is not the quality of discussion alone but implementing intentional structures that work for you to extend engagement over time and move towards collaborative action. Without these, even the most insightful conversations risk dissipating quickly.

The real question isn’t just what happens in the room—it’s what is sustained afterwards. Convenings create opportunity, but it is the deliberate choices organisations make to capture, revisit, and act on those moments that determine whether they lead to meaningful progress.

Have you found ways to sustain momentum after a convening—and what made the difference?
