Primary school science education in Hong Kong is taking a fresh approach through JC CoolScience, a programme that empowers teachers to facilitate inquiry-based learning (IBL) and enhances experiential science learning, to support students in understanding the world around them through science practices.
Science starts here:
Wonder. Explore. Discover
Hong Kong’s primary schools are embracing a new approach to science education through JC CoolScience, a programme designed to cultivate curiosity, critical thinking and scientific literacy through inquiry-based learning (IBL).
Launched in 2024, JC CoolScience encourages young learners to ask questions and independently discover answers, helping to develop essential scientific inquiry skills.
Rather than memorising facts, students explore scientific concepts through hands-on experiments in and beyond the classroom. This approach builds understanding of science in everyday life and develops decision-making abilities regarding health, energy use and the environment.
With science becoming a dedicated subject in schools in September 2025, the programme is a timely pilot initiative. In the classroom, JC CoolScience provides evidence-based teaching and learning resources from leading global and Mainland institutions. Each module includes 300 minutes of lesson plan, with teaching guides, experimental kits, and activity books that connect classroom learning to real-world applications.

The programme also supports science learning beyond the classroom by involving parents and community partners through a variety of engaging activities such as science shows, competitions, hands-on workshops. Science education centres in Hong Kong, such as the learning facilities at the Hong Kong Wetland Park, will be enhanced with interactive displays and activities that encourage everyday scientific exploration.
One key objective is to empower primary science teachers to lead meaningful and engaging science learning experiences through inquiry-based teaching and learning. Teachers gain practical teaching skills and confidence to guide students in science learning through curiosity and exploration. The programme also helps to broaden teachers’ perspectives by sharing innovative examples from around the world, as well as providing field trips for teachers to observe successful IBL implementation and learn from their counterparts. In addition, the programme supports teachers to create changes within the wider education sector through a teacher community of practice, nurturing sector leaders and promoting knowledge sharing. This supportive environment ensures that innovative teaching methods continue to evolve and improve over time.
Set to benefit 500 teachers and close to 30,000 students across 120 schools, JC CoolScience helps students become curious and confident learners by building their science skills and encouraging them to explore the world through hands-on inquiry activities. It seeks to spark a love for science, inspiring students to stay curious, ask big questions, and see learning as an exciting adventure.
