We are building Hong Kong into an age-friendly city by fostering an age-friendly culture across all of Hong Kong’s 18 districts. More than 117,000 elderly were directly benefitted.
Almost one in three people in Hong Kong will be aged 65 or above in the year 2040
The world’s population has been ageing at an unprecedented pace, with Hong Kong being no exception. To prepare the elderly for a positive ageing journey, we have proactively worked on eight domains identified by the World Health Organisation covering outdoor spaces and buildings, transportation, housing, social participation, respect and social inclusion, civic participation and employment, communication and information, and community support and health services.
We set out to help senior citizens enjoy more fulfilling lives by enhancing their quality of life through a district-based and bottom-up approach, mobilising and collaborating with the local community and older adults. It involves collaboration among cross-sector stakeholders, bringing together District Councils, the government, NGOs, the business sector, academia, and other community stakeholders. Through the project, we have promoted an age-friendly culture across all of the city’s 18 districts, encouraged the public to be more aware of the needs of people across all ages, and fought ageism by driving mindset changes.
