Exploring the roots of giving: IoP partners with Tsinghua University to study Chinese family philanthropy
IoP has launched a three-year research collaboration, focused on mapping and strengthening Chinese family philanthropy across Asia, with the Institute for Philanthropy Tsinghua University (IPTU). Supported by the Tsinghua University Education Foundation, the initiative will generate practical insights and build sector capacity to support values-driven giving across generations.
With RMB 8.39 million in funding from IoP, the project will explore how multigenerational Chinese families are shaping philanthropic practice — not only through financial contributions, but through the values, relationships, and long-term vision that guide their giving.
At IoP, we believe that high-net-worth individuals and family offices play a distinct role in Asia’s philanthropic landscape. With access to flexible capital and deeply personal motivations, they are uniquely positioned to drive innovation, foster cross-sector collaboration, and scale impact across generations. This initiative builds on our broader work to understand diverse models of philanthropic growth — from community-led and faith-based giving to corporate and state-linked approaches.
“This collaboration reflects our commitment to shaping philanthropy in Asia through grounded research and practical tools,” said Lester Huang, Chairman of the Institute of Philanthropy. “As Chinese families deepen their engagement, it’s critical to understand how their values and long-term vision are influencing philanthropic models across the region.”
The research will be led by Professor Wang Ming (pictured above left), Founding Dean of IPTU, alongside newly appointed Dean Professor Lan Yuxin (pictured above right), a leading scholar in family philanthropy. Together, they will guide a team focused on understanding how legacy, leadership, and networks contribute to sustained impact.
“Chinese family philanthropy has a rich heritage and growing influence,” said Professor Wang. “This research will help illuminate how values are preserved, impact is created, and networks are built across generations.”
The initiative also lays the groundwork for a forthcoming collaboration with Peking University, which will extend the inquiry into value creation within corporate settings — further connecting family-led and business-aligned models of giving.
This work is part of IoP’s ongoing effort to strengthen philanthropic ecosystems across Asia. By partnering with leading academic institutions and engaging a wide range of stakeholders, we aim to support thoughtful, locally grounded approaches to giving — while fostering dialogue across borders and generations.
For families navigating their philanthropic journey, this research offers a valuable opportunity to reflect, learn, and lead with purpose. And for the broader sector, it contributes to a growing body of knowledge that connects ideas with action — and tradition with innovation.
Stay tuned for updates as the research unfolds. We look forward to sharing insights that help shape the future of family philanthropy in Asia.
