Caritas winter elderly visit: Spreading love and care in Sham Shui Po

Published on 6 January 2024
Organised by the Caritas Cheng Shing Fung District Elderly Centre, the CARE@hkjc Volunteer Team supported the Caritas Winter Elderly Visit on 6 January 2024. This heartwarming event aimed to spread love and care to the elderly during the coldest season of the year.

A total of 180 CARE volunteers were divided into groups of two to three to conduct home visits. These groups distributed gift bags to singleton elderly or senior couples living alone in the Sham Shui Po District. The gift bags were filled with seasonal items. One of the highlights of the gift bag was the inclusion of scarves knitted by CARE volunteers under the "All you knit is love" programme. These handmade scarves not only provided physical warmth, but also symbolised the love and care that the CARE Team wished to share with the elderly. Other gift items, such as instant soup packages, ginger tea, and loquat syrup, were thoughtfully selected to provide comfort and nourishment during the chilly winter days.

During the home visits, CARE volunteers also enjoyed the opportunity to engage in conversations with the elderly, sharing memorable moments with them in the comfort of their own homes. What made this event even more meaningful was that some volunteers participated alongside their family and friends, setting a positive example for their young children and instilling in them the significance of community service. The smiles on the faces of the elderly and volunteers served as a powerful reminder that even small acts of kindness can have influential positive impacts on others.
