Hong Kong’s first large-scale exhibition dedicated to Chinese classical horse paintings across dynasties.
Event details
The Hong Kong Jockey Club is committed to fostering arts and culture to enhance the lives of the people in Hong Kong. “Heavenly Horses: Masterpieces from the Palace Museum” is Hong Kong’s first large-scale exhibition dedicated to Chinese classical horse paintings across dynasties.
Presented in four rotations, the exhibition presents nearly 100 masterpieces by over 60 renowned artists from the Yuan dynasty to the 20th century. Visitors can view 76 exquisite paintings from the Palace Museum, including 15 grade-one national treasures, alongside significant loans from the Hong Kong Museum of Art and the Art Museum of The Chinese University of Hong Kong.
Divided into four thematic sections: “The Court: Horseback Travels and Mounted Archery”, “The Frontiers: Hooves in the Dust”, “Landscapes of Mind and Steed” and “East and West: Steeds Across Time”, this exhibition fosters dialogue between courtly and literati styles, classical and modern approaches, and Chinese and European painting traditions, offering visitors a profound understanding of the significance of horses in Chinese art.
Complemented by arts-tech interactive experiences, AI-powered creative installations, and a rich programme of guided tours, talks, and workshops, “Heavenly Horses: Masterpieces from the Palace Museum” enables visitors of all ages and backgrounds to engage deeply with Chinese painting and horse culture.
Exclusively sponsored by the Institute of Philanthropy (IoP), jointly organised by the Hong Kong Palace Museum and the Palace Museum, this exhibition is part of a five‑year collaboration between the Palace Museum and IoP to promote Chinese culture and nurture arts-technology talent in Hong Kong and the Chinese Mainland.
This exhibition is also part of our Year of the Horse campaign, which aims to honour the profound partnership between human and horse and to unite the community through thrilling races, international equestrian spectacles and a special series of cultural, sporting and family events. The year-long campaign is a community celebration, a tourist attraction and an opportunity to promote equine and community sports development.
