Club-funded hostel complex opens, benefiting 1,200 HSMC students a year
08/09/2016

Youth development is one of The Hong Kong Jockey Club Charities Trust’s key areas of strategic focus. Over the years, the Trust has funded student residences at tertiary institutions across Hong Kong, providing some 20,000 places.

Early September saw the opening of the HSMC Jockey Club Residential Colleges at Sha Tin, funded with a HK$200 million donation from the Trust. The complex will give 1,200 Hang Seng Management College (HSMC) undergraduates each year the chance to enjoy at least one year of hall life, with the valuable combination of learning and living this brings.

HSMC has been opening up more opportunities for Hong Kong’s young people to develop themselves as productive members of society, an objective which the Club wholeheartedly supports.

The HSMC Jockey Club Residential Colleges were completed last September and comprise three blocks providing some 14,000 square metres of space.  Together they house 400 rooms, each with a built-in washroom and shower unit. The accommodation is divided into four residential colleges, namely Mosaic College, themed on “Cultural Diversity”, Wellness College themed on “Healthy Living”, Amity College themed on “Community Service” and Evergreen College carrying the theme of  “Sustainability”.

Located at the HSMC’s Siu Lek Yuen Campus, the Colleges were awarded a provisional platinum rating under the Beam Plus V1.2 standard for new buildings in 2014. Environment-friendly measures adopted at the Colleges include renewable energy systems for rainwater, greywater recycling systems and solar panels on the rooftops for power supply.

Apart from providing residential places, the Colleges house common areas and support facilities such as common rooms, communal halls and an outdoor court for sports activities. In the years to come, the majority of new students will be able to experience hall life for at least one year during their four-year studies, which will significantly enrich their out-of-classroom learning experience. HSMC will introduce community service initiatives as part of hall life.

The Club has put strong emphasis on youth development over the years. Apart from providing hostel places at the eight UGC-funded institutions since 1979, which account for total contributions of over HK$1.1 billion, it committed a further HK$170 million in 2015 to fund an expansion of The Hong Kong Jockey Club Scholarships over five years.
