Jockey Club supports “New Arts Power” to help promote arts to the community
19/09/2017

In any society, arts and culture occupy a very significant place. They are the means by which individuals and communities express their identity, explore the issues confronting them, and make sense of the world around them. Cultural heritage and the arts are the heart and soul of a society. Hong Kong is no exception and is blessed with many talented artists and performers.

With this in mind, the Club’s Charities Trust has designated "Arts, Culture and Heritage" as one of the strategic focus areas of its donations. One of its most recent grants is to fund  a five-month-long festival called "JOCKEY CLUB New Arts Power", being launched by the Hong Kong Arts Development Council.

The HK$38 million Trust-funded programme will showcase on home ground the works of some Hong Kong artists who have participated in overseas arts festivals and activities. By doing so, it will enable the city's 'new arts power' to go further and benefit more local citizens from all walks of life, especially young people.

Taking the theme of "Our Talents, Our Pride", it features more than 160 community and school programmes focused on five major arts areas: modern dance, music, theatrical performances, media arts and visual arts. They include various mobile performances that will rove different districts in the city, such as an award-winning theatrical production called "My Luxurious 50 sq ft Life", and a performance focusing on a new form of sport called tricking.

Other exciting activities across the city will range from open rehearsals, forums and workshops to school and community activities, bringing high quality works of art to people of all ages and in every corner of Hong Kong.

The project also includes the development of web pages and mobile applications that carry information on the participating artists, so that the general public can learn more about them and their work.

In addition, in collaboration with 10 NGOs and government bodies, the participating artists are being invited to create tailor-made artistic experiences for these organisations' beneficiaries, including the elderly, patients, prisoners, youth groups and students from ethnic minorities. The aim is to sow the seeds of art among these special groups, while giving the artists an opportunity to contribute to society. In total, it is expected that the programme will benefit some 124,000 members of the public from every walk of life.
