CARE@hkjc Team Preserves the Legacy of Tai Hang Fire Dragon Dance
30/09/2023

Every Mid-Autumn Festival, the quaint neighbourhood of Tai Hang comes alive with the mesmerising glow of a dragon, as local residents dance through the streets for consecutive nights. Today, the Tai Hang Fire Dragon Dance is officially recognised as a National Intangible Cultural Heritage, captivating crowds with its fiery spectacle year after year.

This year, the Fire Dragon Dance event took place once again in Tai Hang, Causeway Bay, drawing a multitude of performers and spectators. Invited by the Agency for Volunteer Service, the CARE@hkjc Volunteer Team mobilised 20 dedicated members to support this event. On September 30, 2023, they served as the "Tai Hang Fire Dragon Patrol", assisting with various tasks such as carrying banners, identifying dragon dancers, and maintaining order. Their active involvement not only added to the event’s vibrancy but also played a significant role in promoting the rich history and cultural heritage of the Tai Hang Fire Dragon.

In this extraordinary and lively event, local residents beat drums and danced alongside giant dragon balls adorned with incense sticks, guiding a magnificent 67-metre-long fire dragon as it soared and tumbled through the streets. Clad in white caps and fluorescent yellow shirts, the CARE volunteers braved the hot weather, diligently uphold their positions amidst the smoky dragon dance procession. One volunteer shared her delight in experiencing the Fire Dragon Dance for the first time, relishing the opportunity to immerse herself in the historical background and cultural significance of the Tai Hang Fire Dragon. While enjoying the festive atmosphere, she also contributed to the preservation and promotion of the local culture.
