Jockey Club promotes family harmony at Family Day 2016
05/05/2016

The Club has long been a staunch promoter of family harmony because it believes that harmonious societies are built upon loving family relationships. With this in mind, the Club’s Charities Trust launched “FAMILY: A Jockey Club Initiative for a Harmonious Society” (the FAMILY Project) in 2007 in partnership with The University of Hong Kong’s School of Public Health, Li Ka Shing Faculty of Medicine. The project promotes FAMILY Health, Happiness and Harmony (the 3Hs) through a citywide household survey, intervention projects and public education.

As another FAMILY Project initiative to motivate Hong Kong people to spend more quality time with their family members and enhance family harmony and relationships, a series of special events is taking place from mid-April to early June this year, with the highlight being Family Day 2016 on Sunday 22 May, two weeks after Mothers’ Day.

The events are grouped under three main themes:

  • “Family Day@Community”, which began on 22 April, provides a free instant photo shooting service for people to capture memorable moments spent with their family members. A “Family Day – Family Photo and Video Online Sharing Competition” is also being organised to promote the use of social media in communicating with family members. The competition is open to all and attractive prizes can be won by uploading original family photos and/or videos to the FAMILY Project’s Facebook page. Selected photos will be exhibited at the “Family Day Photo Exhibition”. The goal of “Family Day@Community” is to remind people to take more photos with their family members and enjoy the happy moments spent together, making good use of different platforms.

In addition, a range of workshops will be staged to encourage people to design and make small gifts as expressions of love and gratitude to their family members.

  • “Family Day – Shopping Fun” will last for two weeks, starting on 21 May. Various discounts, offers or rewards will be provided for purchased at shops carrying the “Family Day” label (types and periods of offers vary with different merchants). The objective of this event is to encourage families to shop or dine together, giving them more quality time to get along with each other and enhance their communication and relationships. It will also benefit the retail and catering sectors, with over 300 outlets having signed up for the initiative so far.
  • An “Active Families Sing for Family Day 2016 Fun Fair” will be held in Kowloon Park on Family Day, 22 May. This will be a large-scale celebration event offering various family activities, including a “1,000 Family Members Vibrant Singing” attempt to break a Guinness World Record, “Zero Time Exercise” competitions and game booths.

The FAMILY Project team has also announced the results of a recent random survey of over 500 Hong Kong adult residents on their support for Mothers’ Day and Family Day. It indicated that 92% of Hong Kong people will celebrate this year’s Mothers’ Day, with 35% and 37% respectively saying they will dine or shop with family members. The survey also showed strong support for Family Day, with 69% of interviewees indicating they would celebrate this year’s Family Day on 22 May, and 39% and 28% respectively planning to celebrate it by dining and shopping with family members.
