“U-Kitchen” – Learning Cooking with Teenage Students
04/07/2020

CARE Volunteer Team participated in the “U-Kitchen” programme organised by the Hong Kong Federation of Youth Groups, sponsored by the Club for the first time. CARE volunteers aim to assist enthusiastic teenage students to learn cooking different cuisines from professional chefs at Youth S.P.O.T in Lohas Park, Kwai Fong and Fanling this summer. By communicating with the teenage students in the classes, it helped our volunteers to develop close relationships with them.

“A recipe has no soul. You, as the cook, must bring soul to the recipe.” It is a quote from the famous chef Thomas Keller, implying the heart and the soul of the cook are the foci of dishes. In the lessons, volunteers and students became master chefs themselves. They paid tremendous effort and utilised various skill sets to marinate meat, chop and peel vegetables, stir-fry and simmer different meats, etc, to cook all kinds of delicious dishes. Palatable fried pork chop with cheese and ham, tasty fresh crab and chicken casseroles, self-made vegetable and pork wontons make people drool with envy. Utilising food as a bridge to initiate relationships, CARE volunteers also acted as mentors of the teenage students by sharing different precious cooking and life experiences with them while cooking.

Unfortunately, because of the unexpected spread of COVID-19, the cooking classes scheduled for mid-July to August have been temporarily suspended, and would have to be resumed when public health situation allows.

After the culinary trainings, CARE volunteers and the teenagers had given back to the community by designing community services together, and prepared food learned from the training with love and care for the service recipients.
