Supporting "Give Me Five" Food Bank Programme for the 7th Year - To Bring Love and Care to the Community during the Pandemic
25/11/2020

CARE Volunteer Team has supported the "Give Me Five" Food Bank Programme, organised by the Hong Kong Women Development Association (HKWDA) for seven consecutive years in a row. The programme aims at providing temporary food assistance to new immigrants, underprivileged families and singleton elders living in the New Territories as well as helping them integrate into the community. In addition to providing financial support to the programme, the Club also mobilised CARE volunteers to pay home visits to the vulnerable groups to bring love and care to the community.

This year, over 100 CARE volunteers took part in the programme, visiting the singleton elders and underprivileged families in Sheung Shui, Tai Po, Tseung Kwan O, Tsuen Wan, Sha Tin, Tuen Mun and Tin Shui Wai. The volunteers not only brought them goodie bags with food and daily necessities, but also sent them handmade lotion, mosquito-repellent blocks and Chinese herb bags. The spirit of caring was also demonstrated by CARE members’ family and friends who also took part in the service.

The Programme came to an end in November, though the home visit service was temporarily suspended between mid-July and late-September due to the third wave of the COVID-19 pandemic. On 7 November, the Club’s Head of External Affairs Eddie Poon was joined by CARE members and other officiating guests including Chairlady of HKWDA Ip Shun-hing, Assistant District Officer (Yuen Long) Kwong Hoi-ying, Social Work Officer (Yuen Long) Mak Chi-kin and Honorary Consultant of HKWDA Dr Kwan Wai-hong for a closing ceremony.

In the ceremony, Chairlady of HKWDA Ip Shun-hing showed her gratitude to the Club and CARE volunteers for their continuous support and effort in promoting love and care to the elders and people in need in the community. Assistant District Officer (Yuen Long) Kwong Hoi-ying presented a certificate of appreciation to the CARE team to acknowledge the dedication of the volunteers in the programme. After the award presentation ceremony, Dr Kwan Wai-hong was invited to share Positive Psychology and the importance of positive attitude in confronting adversity. The programme drew to a perfect close with a round of applause.
