SPCA Cat Festival – Sharing 'Pawsitive' Power in the Community
11/03/2021

CARE@hkjc Volunteer Team has been actively supporting different animal rights advocates, Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (SPCA) is one of them. To celebrate the 20th anniversary of the "Cat Colony Care Programme", SPCA held its first "Cat Festival" at Lee Tung Street from 23 October to 15 November, 2020. All net proceeds and donations received from the event will be used to support SPCA's welfare programme for stray cats. Apart from sponsoring the Cat Festival, the Club had also mobilised more than 60 CARE volunteers to assist in this meaningful event.

There were many appealing activities at the Cat Festival, including a 5-metre-tall giant inflatable cat doll, Sunday cat-themed flea market, "Street Cat Hunt" game, etc. To further boost the public’s attention and understanding of animal welfare in the community, SPCA also set up exhibitions to promote the development of stray cat welfare work. CARE volunteers attended and supported various activities on the spot, such as answering public enquiries and distributing souvenirs. In the "Street Cat Hunt" game, the participants walked around the street like a stray cat. CARE volunteers also helped with crowd control by reminding the participants to maintain social distance.

Volunteers were impressed by the novelty of the Cat Festival, in terms of how it can bring more "pawsitive" power to the community at this critical time, as well as serving an educational purpose by raising the public's awareness of animal rights.
