10/04/2021

A number of villages in the New Territories with long histories not only have buildings with conservation values, but also have been preserving a lot of traditional customs. In collaboration with Heung Yee Kuk New Territories (HYK) and its 27 Rural Committees, CARE Team has launched a community arts project named “Mural Painting in Rural Villages”, with an aim of promoting traditional rural culture of the New Territories, while incorporating artistic elements into the rural through mural painting.

In March and April 2021, CARE volunteers joined hands with executive members of Hang Hau Rural Committee (HHRC) and Hang Hau villagers to complete a mural in Hang Hau with the guidance of professional artists. Painted on the exterior wall of Hang Hau Rural Committee Building, the mural comprised Hakka unicorn dance in Hang Hau, which was inscribed onto the fourth national list of Intangible Cultural Heritage in 2014, as well as the spectacular scenery of Hang Hau and Chinese couplet written by Chinese calligraphy master. In addition, the Chinese characters “Hang Hau” were incorporated into the design which highlighted the uniqueness of the mural.

The Hau Hau mural completion ceremony was held on 10 April 2021. Officiating guests included the Club’s Head of External Affairs Eddie Poon, the Chairman of HHRC Lau Kai Hong, 1st Vice-chairman and 2nd Vice-chairman of HHRC Sing Heung Man and Lau Wan Ming, the Chairlady of HYK the New Territories Traditional Cultural Committee Chan Ka Mun as well as Senior Liaison Officer of Sai Kung District Council Cheng Chi Wing. The marvelous Hakka unicorn dance performed by Hang Hau residents and its youth team in the ceremony marked the completion of Hang Hau mural.
