"Cattery Service Group" – Cat Lover Traineeship
30/04/2021

The CARE Team is a consistent supporter of animal welfare. To further this cause, the CARE team has organised a service group to support the daily cleaning operation of the Hong Kong Saving Cat and Dog Association’s (HKSCDA) cattery in Tsuen Wan, which aims to provide a cleaner living environment for street cats. The cattery provides shelter, care and adoption services for about 50 to 80 cats, most of which have been abandoned or rescued from the streets. In addition, HKSCDA also joined the Cat Colony Care Programme (CCCP) to control the stray cat population. Cats that had completed the sterilisation operation would be temporarily kept in the cattery for recovery. Upon their recovery, some would continue to stay in the cattery for rehoming while some would return to the street and be taken care of by the Cat Colony Caretakers.

The first phase of cattery service was implemented from February to April with seven sessions. During the service sessions, CARE volunteers assisted in the daily maintenance of the cattery, including cleaning the cattery and kennels, as well as refilling food for the cats. After cleaning, volunteers were encouraged to interact with the cats to help them build trust in human, getting them better prepared for adoption. Some enthusiastic volunteers not only took part in the activities, but also brought along canned food and other materials for donation to support the cattery and stray animals.

Given the overwhelming support and positive feedback from the CARE volunteers in regard to the cattery service group, CARE Team planned to develop a regular service team later to support animal services in the long term.
