08/05/2021

In collaboration with Heung Yee Kuk New Territories (HYK) and its 27 Rural Committees, CARE Team has launched a community arts project named “Mural Painting in Rural Villages” programme, with an aim to promote the traditional cultural heritage of the New Territories, while enhancing urban-rural integration and incorporating artistic elements into the rural through mural painting.

The fourth mural under the programme is located in the Frontier Closed Area of Sha Tau Kok. In April and May 2021, 50 CARE volunteers joined hands with executive members of Sha Tau Kok District Rural Committee (STKDRC) and Sha Tau Kok villagers to complete this mural at the exterior wall of the Former Sha Tau Kok Fire Station, under the guidance of professional artists.

With the theme of exclusive festivals and celebrations in Sha Tau Kok, the mural depicted the traditional and cultural activities of Sha Tau Kok, namely the Hakka unicorn dance, Sha Tau Kok Hing Chun Yeuk Da Chiu Festival and the dragon boat dance parade at traditional wedding ceremonies. Furthermore, the famous natural landscapes in Sha Tau Kok were also shown in the mural, including Ap Chau, Yan Chau Tong, Kat O, the weathered rock named “Ghost’s Fist” at Wong Chuk Kok Tsui.  In addition, the dragon dance performance and Guangdong-type shop houses which still exist in San Lau Street in Sha Tau Kok were captured, allowed the public to learn more about the uniqueness of Sha Tau Kok.

The mural completion ceremony was held on 8 May 2021. Officiating guests included the Club’s Head of External Affairs Eddie Poon, the 1st Vice-chairman and Vice-chairman of STKDRC Lee Ping Wah and Tsang Yuk On, the Chairlady of HYK the New Territories Traditional Cultural Committee Chan Ka Mun and the Liaison Officer In-Charge (Sha Tau Kok) of North District Office Ho Kwok Yan, Philip. At the closing ceremony, the guests added finishing touches to the painting and put a perfect end to the Sha Tau Kok mural.
