Completion of Tung Chung Mural under “Mural Painting In Rural Villages” Programme
18/07/2021

In partnership with the Heung Yee Kuk New Territories and its 27 Rural Committees, CARE Team has launched a community arts programme called “Mural Painting in Rural Villages”. The programme aims at promoting traditional cultural heritages of rural communities as well as incorporating an artistic touch to the rural landscape in Hong Kong. In June and July 2021, CARE volunteers joined hands with Tung Chung villagers and completed the fifth mural of the programme in collaboration with Tung Chung Rural Committee (TCRC).

Located at the exterior wall of the Tung Chung District Recreation Centre, the mural portrays not only the famous spots of Lantau Island including the Big Buddha and Ngong Ping Cable Car, but also the lives of farming and fishing communities in the past as well as the urban development in Tung Chung nowadays. In addition, the artwork depicts the joyful celebrations of Tung Chung “Hau Wong Festival” which is one of the most important festivals in Tung Chung until now.

The mural completion ceremony was held on 17 July 2021. Officiating guests included the Club’s Executive Manager, Community Relations Freely Cheng, Chairman and Vice-Chairman of TCRC Wong Chau-ping and Mok Kwong-yuen, Vice-Chairman of HYK New Territories Traditional Culture Committee Ronald Kan and Liaison Officer-in-charge(Tai O/Tung Chung) of Islands District Office Raymond Lui. At the ceremony, the guests put the final strokes to the artwork and drew the mural to a perfect close.
