Enjoy Reading with Kids Programme: Nurturing Values and Bonding through Storytelling
14/10/2023

The CARE@hkjc Volunteer Team supported the Enjoy Reading with Kids Programme for its second year, with the aim of instilling positive values in families and cultivating strong parent-child relationships through storytelling and board games.

Funded by the Club and organised by the Hong Kong Women Development Association (HKWDA), the Enjoy Reading with Kids Programme took place from 17 June to 29 July 2023. A total of 10 engaging physical sessions, combining storytelling and board games, attracted more than 250 students and their parents from 4 primary schools and 3 HKWDA district centres in Tuen Mun, Tai Po, Yuen Long and Sheung Shui. 33 trained CARE volunteers not only read picture books to the children but also shared storytelling tips with the parents during workshops. Moreover, the volunteers actively facilitated interactive board game sessions, enhancing parent-child interaction and fostering stronger bonds within the participating families. This year, the programme expanded to include school talks on positive parenting, where professional parenting consultants shared expert tips with the parents.

The programme's closing ceremony was held on 14 October 2023, attended by 150 students and their parents from Christian Pui Yan Primary School and Chiu Yang Por Yen Primary School in Tin Shui Wai, CCC Mong Wong Far Yok Memorial Primary School in Tuen Mun, and HKWDA Tin Shui Wai District Centre. During the ceremony, the CARE volunteers not only demonstrated valuable storytelling techniques to the guests, but also assisted in managing game booths for the participating families. To add to the festive atmosphere of the event, the CARE Balloon Twisting Team created stunning balloon decorations and conducted an interactive workshop to teach the participants how to make unique balloon figures.

Together, the CARE Team aspires to foster positive values and nurture stronger parent-child relationships within the community.
