CARE Volunteers x EM Students: Hiking Trails Clean-up Service for Preserving Scenic Landscapes
05/11/2023

In an effort to promote social inclusion and care for the countryside, the CARE@hkjc Volunteer Team collaborated with ethnic minority students from the Hong Kong Children and Youth Services JC Fong Shu Chuen Integrated Children and Youth Services Centre for a hiking trail clean-up service on 5 November 2023.

On the day of the activity, 10 CARE volunteers were paired with ethnic minority youth to participate in the service. The clean-up started at Sha Tin Pei Tau Village Playground and continued through the Ten Thousand Buddhas Monastery and Tao Fong Shan, with the support of hiking leaders from our community partner Trailsweeper. Along the trails, they diligently collected garbage, combining the pleasure of hiking with an appreciation for Hong Kong's countryside. The CARE volunteers and ethnic minority youth also took the opportunity to share stories of their daily lives. Such interaction deepened their understanding of each other's cultures and fostered social inclusion.

Along the 3-kilometre route, the CARE volunteers and the youth successfully collected an estimated 14 kilogrammes of garbage. The most common items found were plastic bottles, plastic bags, and aluminum cans. The sheer amount of litter shocked both the volunteers and the youth, inspiring them to spread the message of "Leave No Trace" to their families and friends. They aimed to bring the experience of trail cleaning back to their communities, promoting environmental conservation.
