The Hong Kong Jockey Club offers its warmest congratulations to the Hong Kong China Rugby on the success of the Hong Kong Sevens, the last to be held at Hong Kong Stadium.
Today (7 April), Club Chairman Michael Lee was honoured to present the Women’s Bowl to Great Britain and to join HKSAR Chief Executive John Lee and other guests for the presentation of the Men’s Cup to tournament winner – New Zealand.
Over the past 30 years, Hong Kong Stadium has been the iconic home of the Hong Kong Sevens, not least since its redevelopment by The Hong Kong Jockey Club in 1992. In 2015, the Club partnered with the Government of the HKSAR to reconstruct the stadium’s turf pitch, facilitating its hosting of international sporting events.
For the third consecutive year, the Club was the Official Community Partner of the Hong Kong Sevens. To date, some 30,000 people of different ages, abilities and backgrounds have enjoyed the fun of sports, including rugby, through a series of Jockey Club Sevens Community Programmes, culminating in a series of events during the Hong Kong Sevens itself.
This year’s Jockey Club Sevens Community Programmes kicked off in mid-March with the Jockey Club Sport for All Carnival and Jockey Club Elite Athletes Sharing Session: No Boundaries for Sports. Ten local elite athletes from the fields of rugby, horse racing, football, skateboarding, triathlon and sport climbing shared their personal experiences with students and online audiences. Under the theme of resilience, well-being and inclusion, the carnival attracted more than 1,000 young people to try different sports such as rugby, football, cycling, rope skipping, bouldering, and skateboarding,
During the three-day Hong Kong Sevens, young players from local rugby clubs showcased their skills in the Jockey Club Rugby Mini Showcase. Meanwhile, through the Jockey Club Sevens School Tour and the Jockey Club Sevens Community Experience, students and underprivileged groups, including senior citizens and people with disabilities, experienced the excitement of world-class rugby. Members of the Club’s CARE@hkjc Volunteer Team also lent a hand, accompanying the visually impaired and students to enjoy the competition as well as providing face painting services.
The Club’s support for the Hong Kong Sevens, like all of its charity donations, is made possible by its unique integrated business model through which racing and wagering generate employment, tax and charity support for the community.
