In support of the Chief Executive’s 2023 Policy Address, which aims to develop Hong Kong into an East-meets-West centre for international cultural exchange, The Hong Kong Jockey Club Charities Trust has funded the establishment of the Museum of Hong Kong Literature and become its Principal Benefactor.

The museum officially opened today (27 May) in the presence of Lu Xinning, Deputy Director of the Liaison Office of the Central People’s Government in the HKSAR; Kevin Yeung, Secretary for Culture, Sports and Tourism of the HKSAR Government; Martin Liao, Club Deputy Chairman; Li Jingze, Vice President of the China Writers Association; Poon Yiu-ming, Curator of the Museum of Hong Kong Literature and other guests.

Promoting cultural development is one of the Club’s strategic charities focus areas. Club Deputy Chairman Martin Liao said the Club actively supports the vision of developing Hong Kong into an East-meets-West centre for international cultural exchange as outlined in the National 14th Five-Year Plan. “We hope that the establishment of the Museum of Hong Kong Literature will showcase the rich diversity and cultural heritage of Hong Kong literature to the community and tourists, so helping to further promote Chinese culture.” he said.

Located in Wan Chai, the Museum of Hong Kong Literature is a one-stop venue for Hong Kong literary collections, literary communication, education and training, and literary salons. Utilising digital technology it showcases Hong Kong literature to citizens and tourists. It especially seeks to stimulate young people’s interest in literature and reading. In addition, the museum is implementing the Jockey Club “Mobile Museums of Literature” Programme, bringing literature to schools and communities across the city, allowing students and citizens to engage with and appreciate literature.

The Club’s support for the Museum of Hong Kong Literature, like all of its charity donations, is made possible by its unique integrated business model through which racing and wagering generate tax contributions, charity support and employment opportunities for the community.
