Statistics show that over 65% of Hong Kong’s population do not maintain a healthy exercise regimen, with some individuals even adopting a “sport-zero” habit. To encourage citizens to incorporate sports and exercise into their daily lives, The Hong Kong Jockey Club Charities Trust initiated and funded the five-year JC Fit City project with an approved donation of HK$336 million, with the aim of helping citizens meet the World Health Organization’s recommended weekly level of physical activity. An opening ceremony for the project’s “JC Fit City – Run With Your Heart 2025” Sports Carnival took place today (25 January) at the West Kowloon Cultural District.
The event attracted a wide variety of participants, including both active and retired athletes as well as citizens from all across Hong Kong. Its iconic “Run With Your Heart” relay race attracted more than 160 teams with a total of over 1,300 participants.
Officiating guests included HKSAR Government Under Secretary for Culture, Sports and Tourism Raistlin Lau; the Club’s Executive Manager, Charities (Sports), Robbie McRobbie; JC Fit City Advisory Committee Convenor Li Ning; and Hong Kong Elite Athletes Association Vice President Dr Malina Ngai.
McRobbie said, “The Club has always believed in the positive power of sports and strives to utilise our funding and expertise to raise public awareness about the benefits of an active lifestyle and be a catalyst for positive change at both the individual and community level. Since its launch, JC Fit City has been organising a variety of sports activities for all Hong Kong citizens to encourage them, whether novices or sports enthusiasts, to adopt an active lifestyle at their preferred pace and spread the love of sports across the community - just as we witness diverse runners here today.”
The “JC Fit City – Run With Your Heart 2025” Sports Carnival featured relay races and a range of sports activities, including fencing and shooting, enabling citizens to engage in and enjoy exercise. For participants in the relay races there were several special awards, such as “Most Creative Costume Team”, incentivising runners to showcase their creativity and unique style.
The Sports Carnival is an annual event of the JC Fit City project held with the aim of connecting citizens of different backgrounds and abilities through a wide range of low-entry-barrier sports activities to experience the joy of sports together. JC Fit City is co-organised by the Hong Kong Playground Association, The Hong Kong Federation of Youth Groups, RunOurCity Foundation, InspiringHK Sports Foundation, Elite Athlete Charitable Trust and The Education University of Hong Kong. To date, the project has organised over 5,500 sports events in various Hong Kong districts, benefiting over 180,000 participants. The Club’s support for JC Fit City and the Sports Carnival like all its charity donations, is made possible by its unique integrated business model through which racing and wagering generate tax contributions, charity support and employment opportunities for the community.
