Environmental Protection

Trust supports first-of-its-kind Water Footprint Calculator
26/07/2017

Have you ever thought about the amount of water we use every day, directly or indirectly, just to meet our daily food intake? Did you realise that a simple plate of stir-fried rice noodles with beef creates a water footprint of 1,238 litres, which is enough to fill up 12 bath tubs?

Now you can keep track of the environmental impact of many popular local foods with the Water Footprint Calculator, a first-of-its-kind mobile app developed by the University of Hong Kong with support from the Club's Charities Trust under the "Jockey Club Water Initiative on Sustainability and Engagement" (JC-WISE).

The Club’s Charities Trust has long been committed to promoting environmental protection and sustainable development, working closely with various NGOs to enhance the public's environmental awareness. The interactive Water Footprint Calculator lets users calculate the water footprint of their daily meals, helping them visualise the direct and indirect water usage involved in the production processes of the ingredients. It is hoped that this will help people realise they can reduce their dietary water footprint through wiser food choices, and will encourage them to conserve every drop of water they can.

The first phase of the mobile app covers more than 90 local popular dishes, snacks, and drinks. Download the app and start to use water in a more efficient way: http://www.socsc.hku.hk/jcwise/water-footprint-calculator/?lang=zh-hant.

In addition, the JC-WISE team has developed an interactive Hong Kong river database and is organising river tours to enhance awareness of the rivers in Hong Kong, so as to encourage the public to cherish the city's water resources. Those interested in learning more about the project are welcome to visit the JC-WISE website: http://www.socsc.hku.hk/jcwise/background-and-objectives/
